LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Saturday will be the 7th game played to Celebrate Cotton on the South Plains, celebrating two of Lubbock’s favorite things: cotton and football.

“It’s a recognition of the great partnership of TTU, but certainly Tech athletics and agriculture, cotton in specific,” Steve Verett with Plains Cotton Growers said.

The Houston Cougars will take on the Red Raiders Saturday and put South Plains cotton in the spotlight.

“It’s very important. It’s the number one economic engine driver for the region - over $5 billion of economic activity generated from a cotton crop,” Verett said.

Cotton bales were placed in and around Jones AT&T Stadium on Friday to show support for Saturday’s big game, each one with a fun fact to go along with it.

“They talk about what happens to a bale of cotton: how many pair of jeans get made... So, for people who have no idea with what happens to cotton, that’s part of it,” he said.

There will also be farm equipment placed around the outside of Texas Tech campus to educate visitors.

“It’s absolutely critical. It’s not just about the farmers that grow the cotton, it’s about everyone that supplies the input. It’s the people that work in the industry. The processing industry, the whole cotton industry is important to this region,” he said.

Saturday’s Celebrate Cotton game is a white out game so if you go, make sure you’re wearing white and, more importantly, make sure you’re wearing cotton.
