Cotton harvest and ginning is in full swing across the South Plains. To help keep you updated on how the 2013 cotton crop is measuring up, we are visiting a different local gin each week this fall.
Debra Wilson is the general manager for Posey Gin Incorporated and said that her farmers are a lot more optimistic now about their crop than they were back in June during the early growing season.
"Since the gin was established in 1930 it has ginned every year consecutively since 1930, Wilson said. "We are an independent gin, one of the few independence left in the area, there are some. The crop this year will just not substantiate putting on a night crew. Our count will be down from the last couple of years, so I'm hoping to do 12,000-13,000 bales. We're a smaller gin, that's still a low count but we're thankful to get that. And we're actually a little more optimistic about our season than we were in June when things really looked bad. Our yields are coming in higher than we anticipated so we're proud for that, and that means the farmers are doing better and that's what we're about, that's what we're here for. So to hear those yields coming in better, that's just good news for everybody."
Several area gins have had to close down or only operate every other year since 2011 because of low cotton acreage numbers resulting from the Texas drought. Wilson and Posey Gin have been fortunate enough to remain in operation.
