LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - A program critical to many area farmers is being impacted by the shutdown.
On Monday, the Farm Service Agency announced adjustments to the Commodity Loan Program.
That program provides a short-term loan for farmers so crops can be stored after harvest and sold at a later date.
Now, those loans are on hold through at least the middle of this month.
The suspension itself is not part of the shutdown, but it was just announced on Monday.
Now people with questions can't get answers because the shutdown has closed Farm Service Agency offices.
Wallace Darneille with the Plains Cotton Cooperative Association said, "They've closed all the county offices. No one can get any answers to anything. The longer it goes on, the worse it gets, simply because we are coming into the prime movement time of all the crops."
The Plains Cotton Cooperative Association says they have alternate funding in place to help their customers, but other farmers could lose money while the situation is sorted out.
